​Wonderful Pistachios®:  Changing Consumer Perception
In 2010 thanks to low awareness, many consumers viewed pistachios as a guilty snack choice – a concern for category leader, Wonderful Pistachios.

  • Position Wonderful Pistachios as a wise snack choice
  • In a crowded category, drive consumer preference for pistachios
  • Increase awareness for Wonderful Pistachios
Execution
  • A “slow snacking“ study was commissioned and published in Appetite, a leading scientific journal
  • Leveraging the study, a comprehensive communications campaign was launched to reach media and influencers
Results 
  • More than 2500 articles appeared including Dr. Oz, The Food Network, NBC’sThe Biggest Loser, The Today Show, Cosmopolitan, Glamour, Good Housekeeping, Health, Hungry Girl, The Los Angeles Times, Men's Health, Yahoo!, Oprah,  Parade, Parenting, Prevention, Shape, and NPR
  • 100% of placements contained 1+ positive health messages
  • Traffic to owned social media platforms doubled during the campaign period; online fan base increased by 40%
  • Market research showed a 24% increase in consumer perception of health benefits, up to 76%

California Pistachios: Creating a Health Halo
In 2010, despite widespread support for the health benefits of nuts, few consumers considered pistachios to be healthy.  With a crop expected to double in 10 years, the $520M California pistachio industry needed pistachios at the top of the grocery list.

​Communication Goals
  • Raise consumer awareness for California pistachios
  • Make California pistachios a lead topic in the healthy snack nut conversation
Execution
  • An audit showed little supporting research for the benefits of pistachios, leading to the formation of a Scientific Advisory Board to guide research
  • Leveraging pubished research, a communications campaign served to educate audiences and shift influencer opinion
  • An online virtual entity - the Pistachio Health Institute – was created to provide nutrition information, research news, and promote campaign messages via social media platforms
Results 
  • 24 peer-reviewed studies were published in leading journals including the New England Journal of Medicine and Harvard Medical Health
  • Widespread media coverage kept pistachios top of mind with audiences throughout the campaign period, and beyond
  • Social media traffic surpassed the category leader by double digits
  • Within 5 years of the campaign, pistachio sales skyrocketed 211%

​The Curious Creamery: New Product Launch
The Curious Creamery launched its DIY Ice Cream Mix in the summer of 2016 with distribution limited to one West Coast retailer, offering a limited window of opportunity during the critical summer season.

​Communication Goals
  • Generate West Coast consumer excitement in the summer timeframe
  • Differentiate The Curious Creamery in the frozen dessert category
Execution
  • Communication materials highlighted the fun, creative aspects of DIY desserts
  • July’s “Ice Cream Month” was leveraged to drive media interest
  • A media relations campaign put product samples in the hands of key media and influencers
  • A product demonstration was secured with influencer Hungry Girl
  • A lifestyle expert served as broadcast media spokesperson  
Results
